I agree with everything you wrote, but working with both the specifications and the source code at the same time needs a lot of time. Ultimately "ripping" the drivers can be compared with surgical division of Siam twins. The chances of success may be small. (Fortunately, the risk here is not one or two human lives, just lost time).
