I hope you'll find the time for it as soon as possible. You can draw some inspiration for the API from the old DIGPAK/MIDPAK drivers. Even if modern standards (AC97, HDA) made them outdated, IMO they had one of the best API for their times. BTW many old DOS games use them, so it's possible to have sound with those games even with modern sound cards (of course, if a DIGPAK driver for the card is written).
