back in the early 90's there was a program call Virtual Sound Blaster that became popular on the bbs'es when soundcards were still expensive. it emulated an SB 1.x and outputted to the pc speaker or covox thru the lpt port.
maybe today this can be updated to a later SB version (at least v2.x) and ouput to newer chipsets like ac97 and intel ich. an SB layer is still important because that's what dos apps/games look for in audio output. if any of you decide to pick the programming, please keep pc speaker and covox output since it is easy to make diy circuits for these two.
andrew zabolotny, the author, has released the source:
his old website is now gone, just early this year
i'm not a programmer. i don't know the feasibility of this. i just hope vsb is not forgotten.
