Okay, the mystery is solved - FD DEFRAG simply checks the DOS
version; if it is >= 7 AND the OS is NOT FreeDOS, it assumes that it
is running in Windows and aborts.

So apparently FreeDOS DEFRAG is designed not to work on any DOS
version beyond 6.xx unless it is running in FreeDOS, for which it
makes an exception, of course. :-Q
