Well, there seem to be at least two different ways for the BIOS to
recognize a USB stick. One is to mount it as a hard disk drive;
this works even with older DOS versions. Another one is to mount it
as a floppy disk drive, and this did not work before. There seems to
be yet another way which I currently do not completely understand.

However, I am making progress. Of my three test machines with USB
support, two are now able to access my 1 GB USB stick.
