The DR-DOS/OpenDOS Enhancement Project

I have a related question:

Does it make a real difference using the pre-built binaries found in the EDR-DOS website or trying to compile them by myself? For example: I have a Pentium D dual core CPU. Is it possible to make binaries capable of taking some advantages of its instructions, running faster, being small in size, etc.?
